NDMC Strengthens Safety Awareness through Emergency Preparedness Orientation

To strengthen the institution’s safety measures and ensure readiness in times of natural disasters, Notre Dame of Midsayap College conducted an Emergency Preparedness Orientation for both College and IBED faculty on October 17, 2025, from 4:00 to 5:30 PM at the Primera Function Hall. The activity was hosted by the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, headed by Engr. Ronniel D. Labio, PCpE, DIT, who also gave the opening remarks and introduction.

During the session, Dr. Genevieve O. Torino, DBM, the Vice President for Administration, provided an update regarding the recent earthquake that struck Manay, Davao del Sur, which was also felt in various parts of Mindanao. She emphasized that it is normal for everyone to feel fear after such events, especially upon noticing minimal cracks in some of the school buildings. However, based on the inspection conducted by the engineering team, the structural integrity of NDMC buildings remains intact. The minor cracks observed do not compromise the stability of the structures.

A structural certification report affirmed that no critical cracks or signs of distress—such as subsidence, misalignment, or settlement—were found in the main structural elements. Access and use of all buildings were deemed safe for academic activities. Nonetheless, the management implemented two days of asynchronous classes to allow thorough assessment and ensure everyone’s safety.

Engr. Moliva also assured the faculty that a copy of the recommended methods for treating minimal cracks would be shared for reference. Despite the positive findings, the Management Committee encouraged everyone to remain vigilant and exercise utmost care. Engr. Labio reminded faculty members to immediately report any newly observed cracks in classrooms or offices to the General Services Department (GSD) for prompt inspection and response.

Mr. Jay Candidier, Head of Security, highlighted the importance of avoiding panic and preventing stampedes during emergencies. He reminded teachers of their responsibility to prioritize student safety, ensuring that no teacher leaves the classroom ahead of their students during evacuation. He also reviewed the standard safety protocols and designated evacuation areas to be observed during earthquakes.

Finally, the faculty were reminded that all emergency instructions should come directly from the Vice President for Administration, and that responders must be promptly activated in the event of an emergency.

Through this orientation, NDMC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe, prepared, and resilient campus community in the face of unforeseen disasters.
