By observing the 40 days of Lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ's sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days. With this celebration, three things are at hand that should not slip off one's mind: prayer, fasting (abstaining from something to reduce distractions and anchor one's attention more on God), and giving or charity.
